Silent and Violent
March 19 – August 31, 1997

An exhibition that presented the MAK Vienna’s collection of artists’ editions published by Parkett. Designed by leading contemporary artists to be produced in multiple, the objects have an intimate scale oriented to private experience, while their production as multiples places them in the public sphere of commerce. Silent & Violent reflected the diversity and openness of contemporary art practice endorsing the anti-dogmatism of current production. Featuring works by: Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Stephan Balkenhol, Georg Baselitz, Ross Bleckner, Alighiero e Boetti, Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois, Sophie Calle, Vija Celmins, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Martin Disler, Marlene Dumas, Eric Fischl, Peter Fischli/David Weiss, Günther Förg, Katharina Fritsch, Franz Gertsch, Gilbert & George, Robert Gober, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Andreas Gursky, David Hammons, Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer, Rebecca Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Alex Katz, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger, Imi Knoebel, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Wolfgang Laib, Sherrie Levine, Brice Marden, Mario Merz, Juan Muñoz, Bruce Nauman, Meret Oppenheim, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince, Markus Raetz, Charles Ray, Gerhard Richter, Tim Rollins + K.O.S., Susan Rothenberg, Thomas Ruff, Edward Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Philip Taaffe, Rikrit Tiravanija, Rosemarie Trockel, James Turrell, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol, Lawrence Weiner, Franz West, Rachel Whiteread, Robert Wilson, and Christopher Wool.

Events
Multiple Discussions, May 8, 1997. A conversation with artists John Baldessari and Raymond Pettibon, moderated by curator Sue Spaid. The discussion focused on the artists’ work in the form of multiples.
